About Joshua Berrett and Music is Brain Food
Joshua Berrett is a musician, musicologist, and author of books ranging from classical music to jazz. He has been invited to speak at conferences in the United States, South Africa, Israel, and Italy. He has also been asked to speak on NPR programs about music several times.
A retired college professor, he has been teaching highly-regarded courses through Lifetime Learners Institute in Norwalk, CT since 2012. He also continues to teach a popular course, The Sociology of Music, online as a professor emeritus at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
With Lynne he has been promoting their multi-faceted approach to healthful aging since 2007, beginning with their blog, Music and Happiness.
Josh earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, an MA in Musicology from Columbia University in New York City, and a PhD in Musicology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His most recent book is Louis Armstrong and Paul Whiteman: Two Kings of Jazz (Yale U Press). His article “Louis Armstrong and Opera” opened a new window on Armstrong’s genius. He is currently working on a new book.
